What does “environmental sustainability” really mean to a business? At its core, it’s about responsibility. Conserving natural resources, re-using materials for production, eliminating harmful waste being released; these areas and many more are efforts all companies should be mindful of when it comes to how their business is run.
There is only one world for us to live, laugh, and play in.
At Petmate, we’re doing our part to ensure it’s safe for humans, and our pets, to enjoy.
Petmate is reducing our carbon footprint by preventing over 60 million pounds of waste from ever reaching a landfill every year. The bulk comes from what’s known as “post-industrial” waste. When another manufacturer makes a product deemed defective, it would otherwise end up in a waste heap somewhere before ever reaching a consumer’s hands. That’s where we come into play.
Our award-winning 55,000-square-foot Spectrum Polymers facility in Mansfield, Texas has decades of experience and is equipped with the latest technologies to identify those unused products. Following environmental guidelines, we then process this post-industrial pre-consumer waste into our EcoTEC™ resin material which has a 1:1 ratio of resin produced to waste and is incorporated into over 60% of the products we make, right here in the USA.
Working alongside our retail partners, including Walmart’s Project Gigaton, our recycling efforts have helped remove 118 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions since 2019. Our goal by the end of 2023 is to increase our diversion of various plastic waste by an additional 10%.
Yes, there is. With manufacturing, anything becomes leftovers. But we take great pride in the fact that over 90% of all scrap is recycled for additional purposes. And when it comes to our machinery, any new investment in equipment must equate to a 15% reduction in energy usage.
One of the biggest challenges the world sees when buying any consumer good is what happens with packaging. The oceans alone can tell a very clear, and sad, story concerning the consequence of haphazard decisions. At Petmate, we are evolving all aspects of our products and how they reach the consumer. Eliminating hard-to-recycle clamshell packaging, more efficient display and shipping methods, and of course the products themselves. All aspects of a product's life are constantly being evaluated.
Our Chuckit! EcoFriendly Launcher is a prime example. Designed with over 95% recycled plastic and is shipped in plastic-free packaging. Paired with the Rebounce Ball, being made from over 40% recycled rubber, it’s our latest effort to help create a beautiful world for our pets to play.
The most encouraging part related to our efforts is that we’re not doing this alone. Many of our partners in the pet space are working just as hard and setting long-term goals for how they can soften their environmental footprint in our world. We have been and will continue, to work closely with them to identify areas of opportunity in how we can all improve in this very important area.
As the leading manufacturer of pet products in the U.S., we are extremely diligent when it comes to the conservation of energy. From energy-efficient lighting in our offices and warehouses, to how we cool our machinery, Petmate routinely finds ways to limit our energy usage and reduce the consumption of what’s in place.
Over a recent two-year period, our energy conservation efforts have resulted in reducing our CO2 emissions by 1,159 metric tons. That’s about the same amount put out by 46,230 propane tanks. Through ongoing optimization and efficiency programs, we will continue to improve upon this energy reduction.
Complex machinery requires complex solutions when it comes to reducing the environmental impact. We’ve recently reduced our electrical consumption by 14.2%, and by year's end have a goal for a further savings of 400K kWh. Replacing machinery with more efficient options, improving our water consumption practices, and continual evaluation of operational practices will be an ongoing effort for us as we look to the future.
